LiteOn COMBO SOHC-5232K

Hardware That Doesn't Work with Linux

Manufacturer: LiteOn

Model number: SOHC-5232K, firmware version NK07

Brokeness (1 to 10 with 10 meaning it works perfectly): 9.5 Mount Rainer doesn’t work, but equivalent functionality is available using the packet writing patch

Reason: Mount rainer support is integrated into the 2.6 kernel mainline uniform cdrom driver. This is a very generic feature which should work the same on all drives. It is therefore either a firmware quirk (which needs a workaround) or a driver bug, not a lack of support.

Notes:

What features are affected / unaffected?

It is possible to format a CDRW as a Mount Rainer disk using cdmrw (correctness of format has not been verified on another drive), but accessing it (e.g. formatting it with mkudffs) causes a slew of errors (dmesg extract follows).

cdrom: hdc: mrw address space DMA selected
cdrom open: mrw\_status 'mrw complete'
hdc: command error: status=0x51 \{ DriveReady SeekComplete Error \}
hdc: command error: error=0x54
end\_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 1179648
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 294912
hdc: command error: status=0x51 \{ DriveReady SeekComplete Error \}
hdc: command error: error=0x54
end\_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 1179652
Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block 294913

This probably applies to more LiteOn drives. Another person described the same problem on the linux kernel mailing list (but I am too lazy to find link or author, just look for subjects including “CDMRW”.

This entry may get removed once this wiki has matured because it is so trivial. I wouldn’t count on the issue being fixed anytime soon however.
